Public Health Dentistry

The Department of Public Health Dentistry is that specialty of dentistry which is involved in the assessment of dental health needs and improving the oral health of populations rather than individuals.

The Department is equipped with 16 fully loaded automatic dental chairs which help provide comprehensive oral health care for the patients visiting the hospital. The department has an attached Oral Health Information centre (Oral Health Education Museum) which imparts Health & Oral Health education for the patients attending OPD with the help of various educative posters, demonstration models and audio visual aids. The Department also has a Tobacco Cessation Centre which provides counselling services to tobacco users and helps them quit tobacco. The Department also provides preventive and curative oral health care services to schools, various differently abled institutions, special groups, old age homes, orphanages etc., with the help of a modern well equipped mobile dental van that travels to even remote locations and improves access to dental care for underprivileged and rural populations.

It is equipped with two dental chairs fitted with airotors, micro motor, three way syringes, ultrasonic scalar, light cure unit, a portable x ray , projection screen for viewing X-ray, a 2KVA generator for electricity and 200 liter water tank for water supply .The department is attached with two satellite centers, one at Villianoor (Urban) and one at Valavanoor (Rural) and also with the Primary Health Centre situated at Nettapakkam.

Students are well trained to conduct surveys, prepare and provide health education to high risk, targeted populations and general public. Students and the faculty have attended various CDE programmes, state and national level conferences and have presented papers and posters.
